Marcus Johnson
Marcus Johnson is my name and I'm a native of New Jersey but I've resided in Harlem, New York since 1992. I'am an accomplished counselor, therapist but most importantly an advocate and mediator for all populations. As a practicing Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) since 2006 and a proud Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) since 2002, I've seen how my background brings insight to members sessions aiding then therapeutically living with trauma and post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnoses. My background and expertise has also allowed me to work together with members living with anxiety, depression, and bipolar disorder. What you may not know about me is prior to becoming an accomplished therapist I was a full scholarship student working towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) degree in dance at The Juilliard School. After completing my second year at the age of 20 I was injured in a motor vehicle accident in New Jersey. The diagnosis of a spinal cord injury least to say was traumatic but more so transformative. With God and supportive family, friend and loved ones I've earned all three of my degrees post injury. I hold two degrees from New York University, one of which is a master’s degree in Rehabilitation Counseling in 2002 and went on to earn a MSW from Fordham University in 2007. For fifteen years I've worked for a community-based Managed Long-Term Care (MLTC) organization where their mission supported adults with physical disabilities and chronic health conditions to live and thrive fully in community life. As the Director of Advocacy and my tenure at this organization allowed me to hone in on advocacy and mediation skills supporting recipients with disabilities on an array of issues from supportive housing, Social Security Administration, Medicaid/Medicare, Adult Career and Continuing Education Services-Vocational Rehabilitation (ACCESS- VR) as well as on the local and state offices of government. I also coach, providing motivational and mentoring approach to sessions assisting Christians, LGBTQ+ community and couples. Currently I’m Advocacy Specialist with a Health Home organization advocating much the same way as when I worked for the (MLTC) for 15 years. In addition I approach sessions with a motivational collaborative style. Implementing a Motivational Interviewing (MI) approach allows me to work with clients jointly to explore a multitude of concerns. If you're ready, I'm ready to take that step with you of what concerns you and make change. I look forward to working with you!

I am a licensed mental health counselor in the state of New York. I have been working in the field of mental health counseling for more than ten years, helping people from different backgrounds as they struggle with anxiety, depression, grief after losses, couples issues and stress and trauma-related disorders. I consider it a privilege to work supporting people as they face life's challenges, providing emotional support, and working collaboratively to learn positive ways to cope and to find appropriate solutions. This means that I do not presume to have all the answers but I can work with you to help you find them. Nor I see my role as a counselor as someone who has to give you advice in every session. Instead, I respect and acknowledge my clients as people with strengths, experiences and emotional and intellectual intelligences who have the capacity to find solutions with the appropriate support and collaboration. Together we will explore your current situation, identify specific issues you want to work on, set goals and explore solutions.

I graduated Pace University with my Master's Degree as Licensed Mental health Therapist and Substance Abuse Counselor. I do not believe in a One Size Fits All approach to therapy as each individual has specific treatment needs as each person's experiences and emotional impact from those experiences are unique to that individual. This is why my theoretical approach is Humanistic and Client Centered. I use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Adler and Gestalt . I have experience working with individuals struggling with negative self-talk, low self-esteem, mood instability, substance use, challenging irrational beliefs, anxiety, history of trauma, and identity development. I believe in the importance of collaboration so forging a Therapeutic Alliance is important, it allows for trust and deeper therapeutic work to occur which will allow the individual to reach their goals effectively. This allows the individual to see. feel and understand that as a therapist my values and morals are not important, the ONLY thing that is of importance is what is impacting You as an Individual from fulfilling the goals, changes that is important to you. I will help and teach you how to celebrate the milestones as well as the slip ups. We all can learn from a slip up after all it is not how you fall, but how you get back up!! My Goal as a therapist is to help you reach a point of strength, empowerment, self-love, self-forgiveness, love whom you are , develop coping skills, acceptance in a safe and nurturing environment, and never need Me again! I provide a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment to help you obtain the support and feedback you need. Therapy is about exploring, experimenting, discovering, and being vulnerable.
