I have been specializing in working with diverse populations for 20 years at a large community hospital. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I feel that I have the knowledge and experience that can benefit a broad range of clients. I have worked with people with Bipolar Disorder, Depression, and Schizophrenia. I help people with challenges that they face in their relationships. I have also worked in chemical dependency. Using a person centered approach, I have helped many people work through their issues and make positive changes in their lives, so that they can achieve their individual treatment goals. I have enjoyed the daily challenges of being a licensed social worker. I have an ability to quickly assess an individual’s needs, and provide recommendations based on need. I provide long and short term therapy to help individuals that are in need of therapeutic counseling services.

Laurie Coppa
My name is Laurie and I am a licensed clinical social worker in New York State. I have been very fortunate to have worked in a variety of settings , in my 20 years in the field, which has allowed me to see how complicated life can become and how wonderful. I have worked on an inpatient psychiatric unit, hospital medical units, Neonatal Intensive Care units, I have worked with adolescents in residential care and survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, families with end of life stressors and just folks who need a friendly ear. I am familiar with the agency systems that although they are meant to help, sometimes add to the confusion. I am an interactive therapist, who also demonstrates empathy and caring while working to empower you to create the life you deserve. I am solution focused and yet compassionate. I feel that the greatest gift we can all receive, is to be heard, to be able to identify our deepest feelings and to express those feelings without fear of judgement; to not feel invisible; to feel like we matter. I believe that ultimately, we know what we need in order to make a better life for ourselves but I also know obstacles will jump in and try to prevent that happiness. This is when we all may simply need some need some outside guidance for the journey . And that is how I see this therapeutic relationship; an opportunity to uncover the obstacles that get in your way of living a beautiful life. So I will frequently return to the concept of Self Love , why it is vitally important and how we can get there. Don't let that scare you! But it is the key. So, I will be your mirror. Here to reflect back to you what you may already know and perhaps to shine a light on something new you never thought of before. I tend to speak in very plain language, choosing to describe and explore feelings rather than label them. I am more concerned that we can communicate clearly and you feel you have been heard. If this kind of team play interests you , let have a chat. And with that said, the development of that team relationship is of the utmost importance. Professionally, I feel that in order to make changes in old patterns, one must commit to the process. It is important that if you wish to change some of the suffering you have in your life, you will need to make your session times a priority. Scheduling a session weekly or bi weekly is ideal. It is the interaction between therapist and client that is most beneficial , which is why I feel that the most effective way to conduct a session is by either video or phone with a live chat being the last choice. Dealing with issues and concerns in the moment is what this work is about. A back and forth dialogue is so necessary for you to get a sense of who I am and for me to learn more about you! Yes, it can be intimidating but terrific as well. I hope you take the plunge and make a really bold leap right now!! Let's work together.

john shafer
By way of introduction, I am John Shafer, LCSW-R. In 1998, I graduated from Syracuse University's School of Social Work with my master's in social work. Throughout my social work career, I strived to learn from the highest credentialed and experienced professionals. Background wise, I have experience working with people in the following areas: rural community mental health settings, school-based mental health settings, city and suburban settings. Vocationally, diversification of approaches to working with people from an array of different environments provided my basis for success. I worked with people across the spectrum of age ranges from three years old to people in their nineties. Also, I gained experience working with people from different socio-economic statuses. Over the years, my ongoing diversity training afforded me opportunities to hone my clinical skills related to populations covering a wide gamut of racial and ethnic backgrounds. I sought to develop techniques to address gender identity expressions that was done in a culturally sensitive manner. Along the way, I prided myself on developing counseling and psycho-therapy skills. In the course of working with people, the therapy models I used most often included: Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Narrative Therapy, Strengths Based Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. In general, my employment opportunities accorded me the chance to develop clinical skills. I implemented different types of therapy such as individual therapy, couple's therapy and group therapy; all of which provided me with professional development opportunities. Interweaving professional experiences with evidence based therapy models, I work collaboratively with people to attain client-centered and person-centered goals.

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in New York with 8 years of experience. I received my Master's of Social Work in 2015 from the University at Buffalo. Early in my career, I gained rigorous clinical experience in an institutional setting treating incarcerated patients presenting with a wide range of mental health diagnoses. I found this experience to be invaluable in developing my clinical skill set. In 2019, I transitioned into private practice where I have the privilege of working with a variety of patients every day. I have experience treating patients with diagnoses that range from depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, substance use disorders, and trauma. Perhaps the most common problem bringing patient's to therapy is their difficulty adjusting to life's challenges. Those challenges can include day to day stress, changes, interpersonal difficulties, and loss. One doesn't need a formal mental health diagnosis to recognize that they are struggling and need support. I tend to approach treatment from a strength's based perspective. From the moment we meet, I will be rooting for you! I hold a core belief that people are extremely resilient and possess many strengths to help them through life's challenges. I offer patient centered therapy with a humanistic approach. I will always believe you are the expert of your own life and take your lead when it comes to your goals in treatment. I'm here as a guide, and can offer you unconditional support, resources, and skills. Thank you for reading this and I do hope our paths cross in the future!
