Karen Hubbard
Welcome!! I am a licensed mental health counselor in the state of New York. My approach with clients is engaging and interactive, and I am invested in the collaborative process, which I believe is inherent to the therapeutic relationship. I aim to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment finding balance between active listening, empathy, support, and behavioral interventions. I will help you identify and better understand choices, ways of thinking about situations, and behavioral patterns that may be getting in the way of living your life to the fullest. In our work together, we will focus on thought patterns, symptom reduction, improvement in mood and functioning and improved ways of relating to others and the world. I believe that individual has the capacity for change, wellness, and healing. My passion is to help others reach their maximum potential and find a sense of peace in their lives. I believe in identifying your strengths, combining them with healthy coping skills, and replacing your negative thinking as ways to help you overcome your current obstacles. I tailor my work with people depending on the specific needs of each client. I use short term, recovery oriented interventions to allow people to take immediate steps, creating momentum in their lives, while addressing deeper issues that may be more subtle, or illusive with longer term strategies. I strive to assist my clients in achieving personal growth and increased happiness. I have extensive experience working with individuals dealing with a variety of issues related to depression, anxiety, parenting issues, relationships, domestic abuse, and stress management. I believe strongly in a non-judgmental approach to therapy, and I offer an emotionally safe space where you can explore important life issues in an authentic way. I hope that our work together will support you in your personal growth and your pursuit of a more fulfilling life.

Welcome! I imagine it took a bit of bravery and courage to take the steps you have taken just to get to this point. I recognize that selecting a therapist is no easy feat so I hope to tell you a bit about myself so that you can make the best decision for you. I also want to wish you the best of luck on your journey, wherever it may take you. I have been a therapist for approximately 12 years now following receiving my Master's degree in Social Work from New York University. I have had the great pleasure and luxury of working with many different populations throughout my career in a variety of settings that have been great preparation for the changing world we live in. I have worked with families coping with transitions, couples looking to grow in their relationships and, most significantly, with individuals just like you who are seeking an improved quality of life and that is fulfilling and purpose filled. I have also been able to work abroad as I lived in Shanghai, China for 3 years which helped to give me a global view of experiences and the realization that many of our struggles in life are more shared then we are aware of. My approach is one that considers you to be in the drivers seat. The therapy I relate most to is called person centered with a bit of cognitive behavioral approaches and certainly is psychodynamic. All of that to say I feel quite comfortable adjusting our work together to be what you need it to be while applying some techniques that have been researched and proven successful for others. The goal generally is to support and guide you on your path towards improvement while recognizing that you are the expert in who you are and how you see your life. I want to reiterate that this really is your journey and that you have already taken a huge step forward in taking care of yourself and being vulnerable, which I greatly admire. We get one shot at this thing called life. Kudos to you for wanting to get the most out of it.

Life is hard and even downright frustrating at times. Everybody faces challenges in life but you don't have to go through them alone. It is OK to get some help while going through life. The first step to overcoming, breaking through, recovering and succeeding starts with the first phone call to me. Know your worth! Be brave enough to break the stigma we face surrounding counseling and therapy. I work hard to create a very safe space - no judging, no shaming - where you can be free to share what it is you might be struggling to conquer. Together we can get through it! I have had the honor of working with many people over the years struggling with various disorders such as anxiety, panic, obsessive compulsive, oppositional-defiant, attention-deficit /hyperactivity as well as autism, anger issues, adjustment difficulties with new (or frustrating) situations, and countless couples for marriage / relationship counseling. I passionately advocate for children, parents, and families struggling with behavioral problems, issues and diagnoses. I hold Masters degrees in both Teaching and Mental Health Counseling, and I am ABD with my PhD in Educational Psychology so I literally can help you from every angle!
