They start to intellectualize the process and look for ways to deal with the problem behavior by treating it as a thinking problem. They read books on the subject of psychology, read articles to self diagnose what they may be perceiving in a desperate attempt to get greater understanding of why the problem is problem. Some of my clients even see therapists as a next step whom they feel were helpful to talk to but feel that the root of the problem remains; exacerbating the problem further where it then turns into demoralization and hopelessness. Their emotional responses get in the way of the life they want in so many ways. They aren’t the kind of partner they want to be. They feel like they’re failing at connecting with themselves and their emotional needs as individuals. And their confidence in establishing boundaries and communicating their needs is tanking. Before they came to see me, clients are concerned that they may not be understood by the therapist or the approach that is being used in therapy will not resonate with their situation. They are worried about navigating the relationships that cause them stress because they are so preoccupied by them. And they are pretty certain that there is a underlying patterns that links between the symptoms they are experiencing now and what they experienced as a child.
